Lenka Dohnalova: You are very young composer. You obtained your first
composition prize at the age of fourtheen. I have read also your opinion that
for you composing is primarly "kind of work". It is interesting for
me that so young person takes it so "sobery".
Were you so called gifted child, somebody concrete inpired you as a child or
your personality is so structured that you are perfectionalist in all your activities?
Dagmara Jack: When I was a child I discovered that music can represent
each art. When I write a piece it can be inspirated by paintings or literature.I
started to write when I was a child,I won my first competition and then I started
to have some lessons with proffessor of Music Academy in Katowice-Aleksander
Lason.
That was the beginning of the story.
I try to do everything the best I can. It's sometimes difficult in composition, but
in another activities I'm also very stubborn.
L.D.Which of your composition take you more interesting (especially
in EA music)? D.J. I work on each my electroacoustic piece just the same hard.Different
is only the way of working. From my pieces for tape I like very much "Raasz",
because it is my personal answer for often asked questions about Jewish culture. L.D.I heard some voices that You wanted to express Your feelings
about Holocaust. D.J. Indeed,my family comes from Oswiecim (Auschwitz),but so many opinions
had been viewed about Holocaust that I have nothing to add. This Jewish poem
was inspirating for me.That's all.
L.D. You are half-breed (Poland-Nigeria) if I have a good information.
Do you think that it produces for you some kind of special inspiration, sensibility?
You have written more times that you are fascinated by Jewish culture...Why? D.J. Sometimes I take my inspiration from Jewish culture but I'm also
interested for example in Indian culture. My piece for tape "Satyamangalam"
was inspired by Indian legend.Of course that my origin is important for me but
only as my origin.Nigerian music is very rhytmic and fast but as yet I didn't
use any Nigerian motives in my pieces.
L.D.You are studying now in Switzerland, you are absolved many courses
in the last year. Is it for you useful? Why? D.J. I think that courses are very useful for all composers.
It gives a possibility to meet each other, comunicate with people and to work
with great professors. Each course helps me to find my individual way of composing.I
learn all the time.In Switzerland there are many fantastic proffessors.
L.D.What is for you fundamental in composing of EA music (not only)
for you personally and for future of the gender? D.J. Generally in music for me is important to comunicate with the listeners.
When I write a piece I think, that during this few minutes I have influence
over the people.By the way:it makes me a really big pleasure!
It is some kind of psychological game. I feel it especially in electroacoustic
music, because in instrumental music there is a greater contact between musicians
and public than between composer and public.
In the future of music it is main case to contact with people.
L.D.What is the situation of young composers in Poland? D.J. The situation of young composers in Poland is quite good.
In Poland there are some festivals where contemporary music can be performed
(for example "Warsaw Autumn" where my piece was performed in this
year).
Also there are very good musicians ,who like to play contemporary music.
I think that people are open for contemporary music and they will be more open
if this music is more popular.
L.D. In Polish Television I have seen a program about You.There was a question;is
there a difference between compositions written by women and men composers. You
didn't answer. Why? D.J. No,I answered that art can not be divided into men and women art.It
is an artificial division. For me a piece is good or less good.We don't live
in Medieval Era.
L.D. I wish you all the best and I will observe your artistic way.
D.J. Thank you.I have to learn many things so it's going to be a long
way.
